Thunderhead Falls

10940 W Hwy 44

Imagine the frustration of 1878 Miners, hotly pursuing a promising quartz vein deep into the canyon wall with hand drills, blasted with black gun powder...when suddenly tons of icy water came pouring down into the gold mining tunnel at the rate of 8 cubic feet per second.

This historic old gold mine is the oldest gold mine open to the public in the Black Hills area.  The easy walk along the rushing underground stream is a delightful experience for both young and old. Electric lighting accentuates the natural colors of the mineralized formations.
