About Us:
The first Fayette County Farmers' Market appeared in the summer of 2001. It was organized by Carol Sowers, then of the local Extension Offices on US 22. She was assisted by Brad Bergefurd of the Piketon OSU Extension Offices. In fact, the first markets were held in the local Extension Offices parking lot on US 22. In the ensuing years others from the local Extension Office organized the yearly market including but not limited to Christie Wilt, Tyler Brown, Linda Morgan, Kim Stover and the Master Gardeners of Fayette County. We are grateful to all those who persevered to maintain a market in our county every year. In 2007, the Market moved to its present location in the City Municipal Parking Lot on the corner of East Street and South Main in Downtown Washington Court House. In 2010, the participating vendors sought to form a cooperative association that would serve to operate the Market in such a way as to hold the vendors and Association responsible for its day-to-day (season to season) activities.
In 2009, records indicate there were 15 full-time vendors and 11 part-time vendors. In 2010, there were 22 full-time vendors, 2 "member" business entities, and 2 part-time vendors AND we extended our Market Season by a total of three months. The Washington Court House Record-Herald has generously provided weekly coverage of Market endeavors.
Our goal is to bring the community locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables offered for sale by the very grower that produced them. In addition, vendors will have for sale local honey, Ohio maple syrup, fresh eggs and fresh frozen chicken, homemade breads, pies, cakes, cookies, pastries, and jams and jellies. Potted seasonal vegetables and flowers are also offered. Several local artists and craftsman have brought their wares to the Market for sale.
