5 Great Paddleboarding Spots in Maryland

With lakes, bays, and plenty of access to the open ocean, Maryland offers many great spots to paddleboard. Remember to always wear a lifejacket, no matter your level of experience! And if you’re new to the sport, consider taking a few lessons before you head out. If you’re a new SUP rider or an experienced paddler, you’ll find a spot perfect for you! Here are five great ones.

1. Jonas Green Park, Annapolis, MD

This spot is always calm and free of crowds, meaning that you can have the Severn River all to yourself! When the wind gets going, make sure to pay attention, as the water can get a little rough at this spot.

2. Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County, MD

Feeling adventurous? This is a great spot to access just over 60 miles of wide open coastline all along one huge man-made lake. You’ll be nearby neighboring West Virginia, giving you some views of the mountains rolling in the distance.

3. Assateague Island State Park, Berlin, MD

With the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Sinepuxent Bay on the west, you’ll get great access to water on both sides. Paddle through gentle estuaries or rougher ocean waves—it’s a great area for beginners and more accelerated learners!

4. Homer Gudelsky Park, West Ocean City, MD

Also known as Stinky Beach, this is a great location that you’ll want to paddle only if you’re a well-experienced SUP’er. The choppy waters that you’ll often share with boaters may spell a challenge for more novice paddlers, but the idyllic scenery and nearby boardwalk make it plenty of fun!

5. Quiet Waters Park, Annapolis, MD

Consider Quiet Waters Park if you’re just getting your feet wet with paddleboarding. Twisted Creek Paddlesports offers a two-hour tour of the area for $50 per person. The tour explores Harness Creek and is accessible to all levels of experience. For those really just getting started, there is brief instruction included so you can learn the basics!
