According to the Cherry Hill Park website, it is “the closest RV park and campground to Washington D.C.” For those unable or unwilling to travel far away from home, Cherry Hill is the perfect place to start. The park is a seven time “A” grade winner from Guest Rated and a recipient of the 2016 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. The park has two swimming pools, sauna, a hot tub, amp service, and access to ice, firewood, and filtered water. Kids will love the 18-hole miniature golf, two playgrounds, and arcade, whereas parents will enjoy the natural trail and easy public transit to and from D.C. proper.
Only 12 miles away from Washington D.C., Greenbelt Park offers one of the best family campground options inside of the Beltway. With over 174 campground sites, three picnic areas, and nine miles of trails, you won’t be lost for activities. Each of the sites has hot showers and bathrooms with site specific reservations available year-round. Regular events, including the Junior Ranger story sessions, bicycle races, and nature walks, among others, makes the wooded park more accessible.
Lake Fairfax Park and Campgrounds offers natural serenity just over 20 miles from the center of Washington. The park has 136 unique sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring/grill combo. One must reserve a campsite ahead of time. Amenities include bathhouses, hot showers, flushing toilets, and dump stations. Pets are allowed, but most stay on their leash. Stop by the 18-acre lake, rent a boat, or fish.
Pohick Bay Regional Park is only 22 miles away from Washington and covers 1,000 acres. Kids will love the proximity to Pirate’s Cove Waterpark, and access to canoeing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. The park is open from March 11 until October 9. Ample picnic areas, grills, trails, and other families make Pohick stand out.
The Shenandoah National Park is a bit of a drive from Washington D.C., but worth every minute spent traveling.
